ORIGINALLY from Elmhurst, Illinois, Mike took up the cello at the age of nine.  Although he first enrolled in college as a photography major, he finished with a degree in Music from Illinois Wesleyan University and continued his studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago with

Richard Hirschl.

Over the past few years, Mike has continued his preparation for an orchestral career by studying with various cellists of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and performing with the organization’s training ensemble, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.  He has also had the pleasure of performing in the International Mendelssohn Festival, Aspen Festival Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, and Castleman Quartet Program, among others.  He has participated in masterclasses with cellists Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, Arto Noras, Tamás Varga, and Brinton Smith, among others.  Mike will spend the calendar year of 2017 working and performing in London as a member of the Southbank Sinfonia cello section.

Still an avid photographer and graphic designer, Mike has had the pleasure of working offstage for organizations like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Grant Park Music Festival.  Mike is grateful for his parents’ generous gift of a 1910 Milanese cello by Benigno Saccani, and his brother’s gift of a 1928 Morizot bow from France.

The Bourdon String Quartet was formed in 2015 and includes members Danielle Seaman (violin), Yuri Uchida (violin), Eric Hollander (viola), and Mike Grittani (cello).  The members have earned degrees from Boston Conservatory, Northwestern University, and Roosevelt University.  Collectively, their festival experiences range from the Tanglewood Music Festival to Lucerne Festival.  The ensemble aims to prepare quartet literature to a high level in a short period of time, basing its projection on that of a summer festival.
